Reconsidering What We Call a False Prophet: A New Perspective on Faith and Spirituality

Did you know that the religious practices outside of what Christianity teaches were actually part of what enabled Jesus to perform the miracles He did? We often talk about Jesus being a Jew, but we don’t always stop to think about the significance of that in relation to the broader spiritual practices of His time.

Moses didn’t follow the Christian path to part the Red Sea. David didn’t follow the Christian path to defeat Goliath. Noah didn’t follow the Christian path to know he needed to build the ark. Daniel didn’t follow the Christian path to be protected in the lion’s den. The three Wise Men looked to the stars for guidance when they sought the newborn King.

This doesn’t mean that Christianity is wrong; it means we sometimes limit ourselves by only recognizing one path. Other spiritual paths are not inherently unsafe or threatening. In fact, the real question is: are we changing to align more closely with God’s love, no matter the spiritual tradition?

Now, here’s something that might be a bit controversial… Maybe it’s time to reconsider what we call a “false prophet.” Is a false prophet really someone who introduces new ideas, ones that challenge what we’ve been told is “safe” or “correct”? Or is a false prophet someone who leads us into more fear, division, and separation—someone who keeps us from seeing the love of God in others, no matter their spiritual background?

It’s important to think about what we’ve been taught to fear. If we allow ourselves to be open, we may find that other spiritual practices—whether they align directly with Christianity or not—are actually helping us grow closer to the heart of God. We need to look beyond labels and let love guide us in how we engage with all of God’s creation.

It’s time to question what we’ve been told is “dangerous” and seek to understand how all paths, when they lead us to greater love and connection with God, are part of the greater truth. Let’s stop dividing and start seeing the unity in all that draws us closer to God’s presence.
