Letting Go of Control: How Trusting God Fully Unlocks True Peace and Joy
I’m starting to see more clearly than ever that one of the biggest struggles Christians face when it comes to relating to God is wanting to follow Him, but not trusting Him completely. We want to be obedient, but often, we don’t fully surrender. From this place of uncertainty, we create rules—rules we feel we must follow to be a “good” Christian or a “good” person, rules based on our limited understanding of what we think God wants from us.
We hold onto control, judgment, and society’s expectations of what is “good.” There’s this underlying belief that we have to live in a way that makes other people “okay,” that we must manage their experiences and fit into society’s mold. But in doing so, we miss the most important thing: going fully to God. We need to trust God with every single person and every single thing—ourselves included.
When we trust God completely, we can be free. Free to fall in love with Him. Free to be exactly as He created us to be without holding back.
The idea of being “good” promises us a good life. We’re told that if we follow the rules, do the “right” thing, and act in the “right” way, then we’ll be happy. We’re promised peace, joy, and fulfillment. But how many people are checking all the boxes, living the “good” life, and still feel empty inside? How many are stuck living for the surface, only to realize that beneath it all, nothing feels whole or complete?
Being with God is the only life that truly matters. It’s the only joy to be found. Going directly to God—not following rules or living for others—is the only way to experience the fullness we hoped we’d find by following the rules.
Think about Jesus. If He had been focused on following every rule, He wouldn’t have had time to be with God. How could He put God first if He was too busy thinking His way through life? Jesus shows us a different way: He was focused on being with God, not following rules. His attitude was, “I will be with God, and everything else is none of my business.”
This is the attitude we need to adopt. God is the authority of all. He is Lord of our lives. When we fully surrender, we can stop trying to control everything around us. We stop managing others’ lives or worrying about their opinions. We let go of society’s standards and simply focus on being with God. Everything else is above our pay grade. Our lives belong to God alone—and so do the lives of others.
It’s really just none of our business. For the last couple of thousand years, we’ve been distracted by rules, expectations, and judgments. But when we trust God completely, when we let go of control and simply fall in love with Him, that’s when we begin to live the life we were always meant to have.
It’s time to stop trying to fit into molds that were never ours to begin with. It’s time to fully trust God, let go of the noise, and fall deeply in love with Him. That’s where true peace and joy are found.
